WRC rejects pregnancy discrimination complaint against landlord

The Workplace Relations Commission found a tenant’s complaint that her landlord discriminated against her after she became pregnant was not well founded. Adjudication officer Andrew Heavey dated the decision 6 December 2023.

Megan Kenna said the landlord’s email amounted to a termination notice and that she and her husband left the apartment in May 2022. Brendan O’Brien said he had raised safety concerns about the external spiral staircase and offered to help the couple find other accommodation.

The officer found that no termination notice had been issued and that O’Brien had repeatedly offered assistance. He concluded that the concerns arose from genuine safety issues and that Kenna had not proved discrimination on gender or family status grounds. The complaint was dismissed on its merits.
