The Workplace Relations Commission awarded Sean Soden €8,000 for unfair dismissal and €2,400 for minimum notice after Sutton Golf Club ended his employment. The WRC decision was dated 22 August 2023.

Soden had worked casual hours as a bar person at the club from 2008 until June 2022. He said he was laid off during Covid, then learned students had taken over his work, and received a letter telling him he was no longer employed. The club accepted that an unfair dismissal had occurred but disputed his redundancy entitlement, saying he had not been available for work.

The adjudication officer found Soden was entitled to a statutory redundancy payment, subject to the Department of Social Protection confirming his service, reckonable breaks and pay. No final lump sum was set, and any eventual redundancy payment is to be offset against the €8,000 unfair dismissal award. The separate minimum notice award was calculated as eight weeks at €300 per week. His Payment of Wages complaint was resolved through that award.
