WRC finds no Traveller discrimination in hotel communion booking complaint

Historic decision · Decision date:

Place: no local area assigned from the source.

The Workplace Relations Commission found that Rolestown House Hotel Limited did not engage in prohibited conduct in a complaint alleging Traveller discrimination over the cancellation of a communion lunch booking. The decision was dated 9 January 2024.

The Child’s parents said the hotel accepted the booking, took a €50 deposit and cancelled after recognising the family as members of the Travelling community. The hotel said the area had already been booked and the deposit receipt was issued by mistake.

The adjudicator accepted the hotel’s explanation, noting that another booking for the area had been made in January 2022. The complaint under the Equal Status Act was found not well founded because the evidence did not establish a prima facie case of discrimination.
