Trinity College Dublin age discrimination complaint by Patricia Malone rejected

The Workplace Relations Commission found Patricia Malone’s age discrimination complaint against Trinity College Dublin was not well founded, ruling that the age limit on employee insurance schemes was objectively justified. The decision was dated 16 October 2023.

Malone, a catering assistant, said she was excluded from voluntary income-protection and life-assurance schemes because she was 66 or older. The College said insurers set the eligibility limit at under 66, in line with the state pension age, and that extending cover would substantially raise premiums for other staff. Employees paid the premiums themselves.
