WRC finds Halfords redundancy dismissal was fair

The Workplace Relations Commission found that Orla Mulroy was not unfairly dismissed when Halfords Limited made her redundant. The decision was dated 9 March 2023. Mulroy, a customer service advisor who usually worked 25 hours a week, argued that her work continued and that an alternative role offered by Halfords involved only 20 hours a week. The company said a wider restructuring led to redundancies and that it consulted her and considered alternatives. The Adjudication Officer found that the restructuring materially changed working practices and that Mulroy had been invited to apply for the alternative role but did not do so. The officer found the redundancy valid and rejected her unfair-dismissal complaint.
