The Workplace Relations Commission dismissed Adel Sallam’s race discrimination complaint over his treatment at an Aldi store in Drogheda, County Louth. The decision was dated 15 March 2023. His separate gender discrimination claim was withdrawn at the hearing.
Sallam said a checkout assistant repeatedly directed him to another till and waved him over, which he found embarrassing. Aldi (ireland) Limited denied discrimination and said the assistant was following store procedures.
The adjudication officer found no explicit racial remark or slur and no evidence that Sallam was treated less favourably than another customer. The WRC dismissed the race complaint under section 22 of the Equal Status Act 2000.
