The Workplace Relations Commission awarded Sandra O’Brien €100,000 in compensation for financial loss after finding she was unfairly dismissed through redundancy. The decision was dated 14 December 2023.

O’Brien said she was selected for redundancy despite being the longest-serving learning designer on the team, while work remained assigned to her. Niit (Ireland) Limited said the Covid pandemic had badly affected its business and that her dismissal resulted from redundancy.

The adjudicator found there had been no consultation and no fair, transparent selection process. The company had not shown that it acted fairly and reasonably. The WRC therefore found the dismissal unfair and awarded €100,000.
