The Workplace Relations Commission awarded Thomas Anglim €15,200 after finding his redundancy dismissal by Coachbury Taverns Limited T/A Porterhouse was unfair. The decision was dated 6 January 2022.
Anglim had worked as an assistant head brewer since 2001 and earned €724 a week. His employment ended in October 2020, when the company said the COVID-19 crisis had sharply reduced demand for its beer.
Anglim argued that the company had not properly planned or consulted about the redundancy and had not considered other roles for him. The WRC found the consultation inadequate, noting that the company did not show it had fully explored his proposal to keep him on temporary lay-off or meaningfully considered alternatives.
The WRC chose compensation because Anglim had found other work and preferred that remedy. It said the €15,200 award was additional to what he had already been paid when dismissed.
