The Workplace Relations Commission found Econocom Digital Finance Ltd unfairly dismissed Ray Walsh and directed it to pay him €120,000 in compensation, equivalent to one year’s gross pay. The decision was dated 11 January 2022.

The complaint followed the closure of Econocom’s Dublin sales operation in 2020. The company said the business was unprofitable and there were no suitable alternative roles. Walsh argued that he was told without warning that his job was redundant and that the company had not properly considered other work or fair exit terms.

The WRC accepted that the sales operation had closed because it was not generating enough profit and that Walsh’s role was genuinely redundant. It found that the company had not reasonably explored alternative work or extended his notice, and that the process was unreasonable. The award took account of his €19,152 redundancy payment. The WRC found no evidence that Walsh contributed to his dismissal.
