The Workplace Relations Commission ordered Metropolitan Films International Limited to pay carpenter and stagehand Nigel Murphy €6,284 after finding his written employment terms were deficient. The decision, dated 15 December 2023, also found his separate claim for unpaid wages during lay-off not well founded.

Murphy worked on the television series Vikings. His contract named a subsidiary rather than his employer and gave an incorrect start date. The adjudication officer found Metropolitan Films International Limited was his employer and that the written terms breached the Terms of Employment (Information) Act. The award was equivalent to four weeks’ pay.

Murphy’s Payment of Wages Act complaint concerned the period after production ended in October 2018. The officer found that he had accepted a lay-off arrangement between productions, during which wages were not properly payable. His separate complaint under the Organisation of Working Time Act was withdrawn.
