WRC finds receptionist’s dismissal fair after €50 tip

The Workplace Relations Commission found a worker’s dismissal fair after he admitted taking a €50 guest tip for personal use. The decision was dated 5 November 2020. The receptionist said the tip was given directly to him and that the hotel’s rules did not clearly cover tips received by front-office staff. He also challenged the disciplinary process. The hotel said he had failed to declare the money and admitted taking other small sums. The WRC found that he knew tips went into a staff fund and that his admission gave the employer sufficient grounds to dismiss him. It did not accept that acknowledged shortcomings at an earlier investigative meeting made the dismissal unfair. The unfair-dismissal complaint was not well founded.
