G4S ordered to pay €2,000 after WRC finds Ernest Cherenkov was unfairly dismissed

The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) found that G4S Secure Solutions (Ire) Limited unfairly dismissed security officer Ernest Cherenkov and ordered it to pay him €2,000. The decision was dated 22 February 2023. G4S had argued that it dismissed Cherenkov fairly for gross misconduct, but did not attend the substantive hearing or provide evidence supporting its case. The adjudication officer found that the company had not met its burden of proof—the responsibility to show that the dismissal was fair. The officer found Cherenkov had no financial loss under the Act. The €2,000 award represented four weeks’ remuneration, as compensation the law allows where an employee has no such loss.
