WRC finds housing-assistance discrimination after letting agency refuses apartment viewing

By Saoirse Doyle

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission found that a letting agency discriminated against a service user on the housing assistance ground and ordered it to pay €1,500 compensation. The decision was dated 20 March 2017.

The service user said the agency refused to show him an apartment after he disclosed that he received social welfare. The agency did not dispute refusing the viewing and said it was following the landlord’s instruction based on insurance concerns.

The WRC found the agency provided accommodation-related services in its own right and was not obliged to follow an unlawful instruction from a client.
