The Workplace Relations Commission found that a meat factory worker had not established race or religion discrimination in his working conditions, and rejected his victimisation complaint. Adjudication officer Enda Murphy dated the decision 18 May 2017. The worker, who was of Egyptian origin, said Egyptian staff were excluded from slaughter work after refusing to sign training records, and alleged unfair treatment over hours, pay, breaks and religious leave. The employer said it required all lamb-abattoir staff to update their records. The officer accepted that explanation and found no evidence that nationality affected the work allocation or the other conditions raised. The worker also relied on a personal injury claim as the basis for victimisation. The officer found that those proceedings were not a protected act under the Employment Equality Acts, so the complaint could not succeed. Both complaints were not well founded; no compensation was awarded.
