Labour Court upholds Bus Eireann’s electronic wage payment policy

By Rory Hanlon

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court upheld a recommendation that a Cork-based driver continue to receive his wages by electronic funds transfer, rejecting an appeal by the National Bus and Rail Union. The Court signed its decision on 20 March 1998. The union sought cash payment, arguing the driver had not agreed to electronic payment and could request a readily negotiable form of payment under the Payment of Wages Act. Bus Eireann said electronic payment had been a condition for new recruits since 1989 and that the driver knew this when he started in 1991. The Court agreed with the Rights Commissioner’s recommendation that the worker and union accept Bus Eireann’s position.
