The Labour Court accepted a pension proposal for a clerical worker at the Technical, Engineering And Electrical Union (TEEU), but rejected the requested comparable severance terms. Its decision was dated 24 September 1996, on Mandate's appeal of a Rights Commissioner's recommendation. The worker had been employed by the National Engineering and Electrical Trade Union (NEETU), which amalgamated with the Electrical Trade Union to form TEEU. Mandate argued she should receive benefits comparable to those of former officials; TEEU said its pension scheme was newly introduced and she was too old to join. The Court accepted pension proposals in line with those for former officials: a retirement lump sum of £6,253.50 and a pension of £69.36 a week, rising by 3% annually. It refused comparable severance terms because the worker had not taken an earlier package and statutory redundancy entitlements were no longer available. The parties should consider severance terms if her employment ends.
