In 1993, the Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner's recommendation of a 5% pay differential for a groundsman at University College Dublin (U.C.D.), after the university appealed. The recommendation was to take effect only after the Programme for Economic and Social Progress expired as it applied to the worker. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union argued his additional responsibilities for maintaining and issuing track equipment warranted higher pay. The university accepted that his position was unique but argued it did not justify a higher rate. The Court found no grounds to set aside the recommendation. Its decision was dated 28 September 1993.
