The Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation that Longford Urban District Council regrade a worker in its sanitary services division to Grade 111, above his current pay, with annual progression to the maximum. The decision was signed on 13 December 1990. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union argued that the worker’s sewage pump and pipe duties were those of a caretaker. The Council said he was a labourer assigned to sanitary services and could be given other work. The Court relied particularly on his call-out liability and work descaling sewage pipes in upholding the recommendation.
