Labour Court upholds recommendation against extra pay for three Smurfit workers

In 1990, the Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation against extra pay for three workers at Smurfit Corrugated Cases. The decision was signed on 6 June 1990. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union appealed over the company’s change to an agreement that designated the Friday before the October bank holiday as a fixed holiday. The workers took the day off with pay, while management staff carried out the work. The Court said changing the agreement was not good industrial relations practice, but did not recommend payment because the workers had not worked that Friday.
