In 1989, the Labour Court overturned a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation that Aer Rianta offer £150 each to two workers over the introduction of a new paint machine. Its decision was signed on 31 January 1989, after appeals by Aer Rianta and the Union Of Construction Allied Trades And Technicians. The union argued that productivity gains and savings justified more compensation. Aer Rianta said existing agreements covered new equipment and work practices. The Court found the union’s claim unsustainable in light of the company and union agreements, and upheld Aer Rianta’s appeal.
