In 1989, the Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner's recommendation that Bus Eireann pay two drivers four hours' pay each for time lost during an industrial dispute. The decision was signed on 7 June 1989. The drivers, based at Broadstone Garage and working the Dublin-Cork route, lost pay during a stoppage over a meal allowance. The National Busworkers Union said they were ready to work under their agreement; Bus Eireann said they had refused instructions and alternative duties. The Court found there had been confusion and faults on both sides, and considered that the Rights Commissioner had struck a fair balance. It upheld the recommendation, which set payment at four hours' pay at each driver's usual rate.
