In 1989, the Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation for two £1,500 goodwill payments to an Irish Red Cross worker who did extra work recovering an inheritance bequest for the Society. The decision was signed on 14 April 1989. The Federated Workers Union Of Ireland appealed on the worker’s behalf, seeking £10,000 and arguing that the work on Madame Winifred Kessel’s estate was exceptional and that compensation had been discussed. The Irish Red Cross disputed that it had agreed to pay compensation in the manner claimed and relied on the worker’s employment terms. The Court found no grounds to alter the recommendation, so it remained in place.
