In 1989, the Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation that a claim for extra compensation by 12 wrapping machine operators at Irish Biscuits Limited fail. The decision was signed on 12 April 1989. The Amalgamated Transport and General Workers’ Union, the Federated Workers’ Union of Ireland and the Bakery and Food Workers Amalgamated Union said new equipment had increased the operators’ responsibility. Irish Biscuits said the equipment was a normal part of modern wrapping work and did not justify extra pay. The Labour Court found the earlier recommendation reasonable and let it stand.
