In 1988, the Labour Court upheld Cadbury (Ireland) Limited's appeal against a recommendation to provide transport home for late-shift workers. The decision was signed on 30 May 1988. The Federated Workers' Union of Ireland and the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers' Union sought free transport for workers finishing after midnight, citing safety concerns in Coolock. A Rights Commissioner had recommended a one-year trial for seven workers without motorised transport. Cadbury argued that changing shift finishing times would let workers use public transport and avoid the cost of providing transport. The Court considered the proposed shift changes a reasonable response and decided Cadbury need not provide the free transport claimed. The appeal therefore displaced the transport recommendation.
