Labour Court declines overtime compensation claim against Clonmel Corporation

The Labour Court did not recommend that Clonmel Corporation concede the Amalgamated Transport And General Workers' Union's claim for compensation for 12 workers who lost regular overtime after services were reorganised. The recommendation was signed on 26 May 1988. The union said the overtime had been regular and rostered for years and that its removal caused workers significant financial losses. Clonmel Corporation cited severe financial constraints and said eliminating overtime helped preserve full-time jobs and avoid redundancies. The Court acknowledged that some workers would lose considerable overtime earnings, but did not recommend concession of the claim because of the Corporation's financial constraints.
