Labour Court disallows union appeal over traffic warden overtime

The Labour Court disallowed the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s appeal against a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation on extra compensation for a supervisory traffic warden who collected money from parking meters. The decision was dated 5 December 2011. The union sought an additional three hours’ overtime, arguing that the worker’s existing overtime did not cover meter collection and that the contract did not include the duty. Ennis Town Council said collecting money was part of traffic wardens’ duties and that existing overtime already recognised those duties. The Rights Commissioner had recommended against the claim because the worker already received three hours’ overtime for collecting money. The Labour Court found no basis to interfere and affirmed the recommendation.
