The Labour Court upheld a recommendation that a part-time teacher receive enhanced redundancy terms after his fixed-term contract ended. The Rights Commissioner had recommended severance of six weeks’ pay per year of service, inclusive of statutory redundancy. The worker was represented by the Irish Municipal, Public and Civil Trade Union; the Committee was represented by Advokat Compliance Limited. County Wexford Vocational Education Committee appealed, arguing that the contracts had expired and it would not concede enhanced terms amid the decline in public finances. The union said publicly funded education agencies with organised union employees paid or had paid enhanced redundancy. In a decision dated 1 June 2010, the Labour Court concurred with the Rights Commissioner and the employer’s appeal failed.
