Wayne Cooney was sentenced to the mandatory term of life imprisonment for the murder of Jordan Davis. The proceedings were reported on 8 July 2022.

Cooney had pleaded not guilty to murder. A jury convicted him earlier in the week of the report.

Davis, 22, was pushing his four-month-old son in a buggy in Darndale, north Dublin, when he was shot on 22 May 2019. The report said Cooney fired about eight or nine shots, hitting Davis three times.

Mr Justice Tony Hunt described Cooney as an extremely dangerous individual and said he trusted the authorities would ensure the danger had well abated before considering parole.

The judge criticised privacy arguments about CCTV evidence, describing them as a waste of time and money in repeated trials. Defence counsel Giollaiosa Ó Lidheadha said the arguments were made by conscientious counsel, based on properly adduced evidence and supported by Supreme Court and European Court judgments. Judge Hunt accepted that the arguments had been made conscientiously, but repeated that he considered them spurious.
