A murder trial heard on 22 November 2017 that Keith Brady had told gardai he stabbed Martin Kivlehan in the neck. Brady gave the statement at Castlerea Prison on 15 December 2015.

Brady pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to the manslaughter of Martin 'Matt' Kivlehan, a plea rejected by the State. Kivlehan died from two stab wounds to the neck; the alleged killing was at New Apartments, Holborn Street, Sligo, on 2 or 3 August 2015. The proceedings were reported on 23 November 2017.

Inspector Tom Colsh said he and Garda Martin McHale visited Brady at the prison after a prison officer said Brady wished to speak to them. In his statement, Brady said he could not remember where he got the knife or why he stabbed Kivlehan. He said he had not gone out to kill anyone and that his sister Janice had not harmed Kivlehan.

The jury also heard that, in interviews with gardai in November 2015, Brady said he could not remember much about the night because he was highly intoxicated from alcohol and drugs, and said he had not murdered anyone. The trial was continuing before Justice Paul McDermott at the Central Criminal Court on 23 November 2017.
