Gerry Nevin was jailed for two years after pleading guilty to assault causing harm to an Irish Rail ticket inspector on a Dublin-to-Sligo train at Connolly Station on September 21, 2024. The inspector had asked him to leave after finding him with a can of alcohol. Nevin was aged 32 and lived in Mostrim Road, Ballymahon, Co Longford.

The court heard that Nevin pushed the inspector against a locked carriage door, punched him and put him in a headlock. The inspector suffered a busted lip and cuts to his nose and face, and his glasses were broken. In a victim impact statement, he said Nevin threatened to have him killed, and that he needed hospital treatment and was off work for four months because of physical injuries and the psychological effects.

Judge Martina Baxter set a headline sentence of three-and-a-half years, reduced it to two-and-a-half years after considering mitigating factors including Nevin’s early guilty plea, then suspended the final six months subject to conditions. These included six months under Probation Service supervision after release and completing offence-related courses.
