Tony Gummerson was sentenced to nine years in prison, with the final two years suspended on conditions, for rape and sexual assault. He was jailed for seven years.

Justice Eileen Creedon sentenced Gummerson at the Central Criminal Court on 20 February 2023. The sentence was backdated to when he went into custody in June 2022.

A jury found him guilty of four counts of sexual assault, two counts of oral rape and one count of raping his step-niece after a trial in June 2022. The offences took place between September 1997 and March 1998, when Gummerson was 17 and the girl was aged between seven and eight.

The judge said Gummerson was babysitting at the time and that the abuse involved a significant breach of trust. She said his young age at the time of the offences was the most significant mitigating factor.
