Sidney Sutton wins appeal against assault conviction

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Sidney Sutton won an appeal against his assault conviction at the Court of Appeal, reported on 26 April 2021. The court quashed his 2017 conviction after finding that the trial judge erred by allowing the prosecution to edit interview records.

The conviction covered four counts of assault, one count of assault causing harm and one count of producing a knife capable of inflicting serious injury. The prosecution alleged the offences occurred at Sutton and his partner’s home in Ashbourne, Co Meath, in the early hours of 6 February 2016.

The Court of Appeal said Sutton would appear before it again on 10 May, when the Director of Public Prosecutions would say whether it intended to seek a retrial. Sutton would be entitled to oppose any application.

This report covers an earlier stage of the case. Later developments are not reported here.
