Philip Murphy gets 10 years for sexual assaults

By Gráinne Nolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Philip Murphy had his total sentence for two sexual assaults increased to 10 years by the Court of Appeal on 8 March 2022.

Murphy had pleaded guilty and received concurrent six-year sentences after attacking two women in Dublin city centre in February 2016.

The appeal court found the original sentence unduly lenient and ordered that he serve 10 years behind bars. The earlier sentence was imposed by Judge Melanie Greally at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, while the appeal was heard by three judges. Murphy’s defence cited his guilty plea and remorse; the appeal outcome replaced the concurrent terms.
