Michael Furlong barred from murder retrial
This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.
Michael Furlong was charged with murdering Patrick Connors at the High Court, where Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns barred a retrial on 6 May 2015. The killing was alleged to have happened at the Carraig Tur apartment complex in Enniscorthy in April 2011.
Furlong’s murder trial collapsed in November 2013 after a dispute about pathology evidence. His lawyers argued that a retrial would be oppressive, while the defence case included suggestions that injuries could have been self-inflicted or caused by a fall, with hypothermia also contributing to death.
The jury was discharged after the prosecution accepted it could no longer rely on Dr Khalid Jaber’s evidence about the mechanism of death. The proceedings were reported on 7 May 2015.
