Man’s 13-year rape sentence upheld on appeal

By Fionn Kelly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

A man’s 13-year sentence for rape was upheld by the Court of Appeal on 27 June 2017, after the court dismissed his appeal against sentence. He had received a 14-year term with the final year suspended for raping a woman four times during a single incident at his Laois home.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was convicted of two rape charges, two charges of anal rape and assault causing harm. The court said the attack was at the upper end of seriousness, citing its prolonged and violent nature, additional humiliation and degradation, and credible threats to kill the woman and her mother.
