This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The High Court approved a €1.9 million settlement for a boy who suffered severe personal injury after his birth at Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise in 2009. The settlement was made without an admission of liability. His mother had sued the HSE over alleged failures in the care provided to her and her son.

The case concerned allegations that abnormal heart-rate traces were discontinued or difficult to interpret and that an emergency Caesarean was performed 80 minutes after the decision to proceed, which was said to be 50 minutes beyond the usual timeframe. It was also alleged that the boy experienced breathing difficulties and delayed resuscitation. He spent 11 days in intensive care, and an MRI showed kidney and brain infarcts, according to the report.
