Lough Swilly society wins leave over oyster farming licences

By Aoife Loughran

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Lough Swilly Wild Oyster Society secured leave in the High Court on 6 March 2018 to challenge oyster farming licences.

The society claims licences for non-native oyster farming in Lough Swilly, Co Donegal, were issued beyond ministerial powers.

It also alleges that uncontrolled Pacific oysters have damaged native oyster beds and that its appeals were not properly considered.

The proceedings seek orders concerning the licences issued to Lough Swilly Shellfish Growers Co-Operative Society Ltd, with the society supporting properly regulated oyster farming in principle.

This report covers an earlier stage of the case. Later developments are not reported here.
