Nikita Burns appeals murder conviction after life sentence

By Donal Gilhooly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Nikita Burns has appealed her murder conviction at the Court of Appeal, which heard the case on 23 July 2026. She was convicted of murdering Robert Wilkin at the Central Criminal Court after a trial over his death in Donegal.

Burns’s counsel argued that her recorded statements to friends should not have been heard by the jury because she was intoxicated and not in a rational state. The Director of Public Prosecutions argued that statements made to private citizens were admissible; the three-judge court reserved judgment.

Burns was sentenced to life imprisonment on 7 March 2025. The appeal hearing did not determine whether her conviction would be overturned.
