A Limerick man was jailed for sexually assaulting his neighbour at the Central Criminal Court, as reported on 3 July 2017. The 51-year-old cannot be named for legal reasons. He received a four-and-a-half-year sentence, backdated to April, after pleading guilty to assault causing harm and sexual assault. The attack happened at the woman’s home in County Cork on 4 November 2015.

The court heard that he attacked the 66-year-old woman, put a cushion over her face and sexually assaulted her. Mr Justice Paul Coffey described the attack as unprovoked, brutal and shocking. The sentence reflected his guilty plea, remorse and apology, as well as the traumatic impact on the woman.
