John English granted bail in rape sentence appeal

By Eimear Byrne

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

John English was granted bail in the Court of Criminal Appeal on 12 December 2013, pending an appeal against the reactivation of five suspended years of an 18-year sentence for rape.

The appeal concerned whether probation-service conditions applied for five years from his 28 June 2004 sentence, rather than from his release in September 2012. His counsel, Dominic McGinn SC, said this was English’s only bond.

Bail required English to abstain from alcohol until the appeal is decided, keep the peace, be of good behaviour, and sign on at Mayfield Garda station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The case was listed for mention on 12 February.
