James Flynn fails to stop phone search in money laundering probe

By Aoife Loughran

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

James Flynn failed to obtain a High Court injunction stopping a Garda application to the District Court for a warrant to examine data on his mobile phone. The proceedings were reported on 6 February 2024.

His phone was seized and his Dublin office searched as part of an investigation into alleged money laundering.

Mr Flynn and his firm had challenged the earlier search warrant, claiming it was unlawful and seeking the return of seized items.

Mr Justice Anthony Barr ruled that the warrant application could proceed, while directing that the District Court receive relevant case law and a copy of his judgment.

He said the District Court judge could still find that granting a warrant would disproportionately interfere with Mr Flynn’s privacy rights and breach his right to assert legal privilege.
