Greta Dudko, a 36-year-old nurse, was sentenced to life in prison for murdering her mother following a majority verdict at the Central Criminal Court. The proceedings were reported on 22 October 2014. The killing happened in Clonsilla, Dublin, on Christmas Eve 2010. Dudko had pleaded guilty to manslaughter but denied the murder of Anna Butautiene, 55.
The jury found her guilty after four-and-a-half hours of deliberations, which began on 21 October 2014. The report said Dudko and her mother had argued when her mother returned home to find her grandson gone, and that her mother was hit with a bottle. Dudko’s lawyers said she was so intoxicated she could not have intended to kill her mother.
The report said Dudko’s mother had moved from Lithuania to Ireland to help care for her grandson. Dudko said her mother encouraged her to leave her husband and move to an apartment with her before Christmas. The report also recorded that Dudko had an alcohol problem and had been suspended from her nursing job.
