Gerard Hutch denies murder charge as gang evidence is heard

By Donal Gilhooly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Gerard Hutch pleaded not guilty to murdering David Byrne at the Special Criminal Court, which heard evidence about the Hutch organised crime group on 10 November 2022.

Detective Superintendent David Gallagher described the group as built on intergenerational family bonds, with associates working together, independently and alongside other criminal organisations. He said it was less hierarchical than some groups and operated through loyalty and monetary gain.

Gallagher said the Hutch-Kinahan dispute had galvanised positions within the group since 2015. The evidence about the group related to the cases against Jason Bonney and Paul Murphy, not Hutch; both men also pleaded not guilty to helping a gang commit the murder.
