This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Gary Walsh pleaded not guilty to murder at the Central Criminal Court. The charge concerned the death of Cathal Sweeney at a house in Terenure on 8 February 2014.

Walsh also pleaded guilty to manslaughter, but the State did not accept that plea. The proceedings were reported on 6 October 2015.

The trial had opened before Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy. The prosecution alleged that Walsh assaulted Sweeney after a row at a flat where men had been drinking.

The court heard that Sweeney was found unresponsive with significant facial trauma. He was brought to St James’s Hospital shortly after 6pm on 8 February 2014 and pronounced dead at 6.32pm after further resuscitation failed.

The court also heard that Gary Walsh apparently carried out CPR on Cathal Sweeney. The trial was continuing when the report was published.
