Gary Walsh on trial for Terenure murder

By Saoirse Doyle

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Gary Walsh had gone on trial charged with the murder of Cathal Sweeney in Terenure. The proceedings were reported on 6 October 2015.

Walsh admitted killing Mr Sweeney at a flat in Terenure on 8 February 2014. Paramedics were called to the flat at Ashdale Gardens that evening.

He denied murder, and his manslaughter plea was not accepted by the prosecution.

Senior Counsel Patrick McCarthy told the jury that the prosecution had to prove Walsh intended to kill or cause serious injury to Mr Sweeney.

Mr McCarthy said intoxication would be an issue and the jury would have to decide how it affected Walsh’s actions. He said jurors would hear evidence of a shambolic and chaotic lifestyle and a lot of alcohol consumption.
