Gary Walsh jailed for manslaughter of Cathal Sweeney

By Tadhg O'Sullivan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Gary Walsh was sentenced to five years in prison for the manslaughter of Cathal Sweeney, after the State accepted his guilty plea following two murder trials in which juries could not agree on a verdict. The sentencing judge said the appropriate penalty was 10 years, reduced to eight to account for the guilty plea, with the final three years suspended.

The judge said Walsh appeared to have rehabilitated and expressed genuine remorse. Walsh had admitted punching Sweeney repeatedly at a flat in Terenure in February 2014; Sweeney died from his injuries.
