Frank Kamara received a fully suspended 12-month prison sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. He pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography. The offence occurred on 17 January 2018. The proceedings were reported on 10 April 2019.
Garda Joanne Grogan said Kamara was working on a cleaning crew at a Dublin city shopping centre when he sent a video to his supervisor. The supervisor viewed it briefly, deleted it and confronted him. Kamara tearfully said he had sent it to highlight the dangers of child sexual exploitation and warn the supervisor not to leave his children with people he did not trust. He agreed to attend a Garda station at the supervisor’s urging.
Garda Grogan said the four-minute-59-second video showed a man raping a boy aged approximately one or two. She agreed with defence counsel Roisin Lacey that Kamara was in no way responsible for producing it. Kamara told gardaí a woman in Nigeria had sent him the video and that he deleted it after sending it to his supervisor.
Ms Lacey said it was the only example of child pornography found on Kamara’s phone. Judge Elma Sheahan accepted that it was a one-off offence involving very bad judgement, and said its seriousness was an aggravating factor. She cited mitigation including Kamara’s guilty plea, self-reporting, co-operation, remorse, good work history, previous good character, charitable contributions and lack of understanding of the seriousness of his actions. She suspended the sentence on condition that he keep the peace and be of good behaviour for 12 months.
