Eve Doherty has harassment sentence partly suspended

By Ruairí Dolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Eve Doherty’s three-year sentence for harassment was partly suspended by the Court of Appeal on 2 July 2019, after 20 months in custody. The court left the sentence imposed by the Circuit Court in place but suspended the unserved portion.

Doherty had been convicted after a contested trial and had appealed both her conviction and sentence. The court had already dismissed her conviction appeal on 31 May 2019.

The Court of Appeal found that the absence of a suspended element was an error in principle. It cited mitigation including Doherty’s first-time offending, mature age, public service record and the particular difficulty of imprisonment, and said it would hear submissions on the suspension terms.
