Alice Byrne's appeal against her assault sentence was dismissed by the Court of Appeal on 2 July 2019; she had received four years, with the final year suspended.
The assault causing harm happened outside James Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown, on 13 August 2017. Byrne had pleaded guilty to that offence, as well as trespass and criminal damage relating to an earlier incident in Coolock.
The court found no error in principle in the sentence. It also upheld the sentencing judge's selection of five years as the headline sentence, while the sentence included a consecutive nine-month term for the other offences.
