Joseph Doyle, 68, of Vesey Mews, Monkstown, Co Dublin, received a two-year sentence, suspended in full on strict conditions, at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. He pleaded guilty to possession of child sexual abuse material, known in law as child pornography. The proceedings were reported on 22 May 2025.

An investigating garda told prosecution counsel Caroline Latham that 954 images were found on a laptop and a PC. The court heard that 220 were in the most serious category of a child sexual nature, 580 were categorised as child exposure and 216 as child anime. It was accepted that there was no suggestion of distribution or sharing.

Doyle was cooperative when gardaí searched his home, made admissions after caution and provided usernames and passwords. In interview, he told gardaí he had an issue with pornography and problems with drugs and drink. He said accessing the material became a challenge because it was very difficult, and that he was shocked when gardaí arrived but also felt relief and apologised.

The garda agreed with defence counsel Justin McQuaid that Doyle had entered an early guilty plea and expressed remorse. McQuaid asked the court to consider Doyle’s admissions, cooperation and rehabilitation efforts. The court heard he had no previous convictions, and the garda agreed that almost six years had passed between the offence and sentencing.

Judge Martin Nolan noted the effort Doyle had spent obtaining the images and Court of Appeal precedents indicating that a non-custodial sentence should be considered in the absence of aggravating factors, including distribution.
